Years ago, I took a class called Creativity from Shannon Jones. In this class, we learned how to be creative and how to encourage others to be creative. This class was excruciating for me; I am not creative; I cannot draw or paint, and I don’t find pleasure in the creation of something new. But I battled through. I joined Creativity Happy Hours; I went to one-shot art classes; I tried art projects at home. Mostly, I struggled in the pain. And then, one day, I realized I was okay enough with my artwork to give it away. I gave one of those first projects to Shannon. And I’ve continued to play with art ever since. I’m not any better – just more relaxed about sharing it! This practice in being vulnerable has helped me in a variety of settings. I urge you to give it a try!
